Long Ago Day

Our entire first grade team dressed up in long ago attire to bring a little history into our classrooms. Each class rotated to the other rooms to make long ago treats. In Mrs. Crawford's room, the children wrote with quills on hornbooks. In my room, the children made patchwork quilt pieces. The classes then dyed fabric for our 1st grade quilt with natural dyes in Mrs. Nelson's room. Each student made a covered wagon in Mrs. Kite's room. Finally, they made old fashioned butter with Mrs. Hensley. It was a fun filled day of long ago activities.

Field Trip Back In Time-Frontier Culture

Our class took a "trip" back in time when we visited the Frontier Culture Museum. In class we are working on learning about the differences between long ago and today. At the Museum we saw first hand how lucky we are to have our modern advantages. The staff put the children hard to work by fetching water, cooking over open fires, using the loom to make clothes and turning flax into linen. The kids learned that the children of long ago had many more chores than the children of today. We enjoyed the activities, but we wouldn't want to do them every day. We we amazed by the differences in the clothes and the homes of long ago. Things seemed a lot less comfortable then. Even the animals we different. Did you know that ALL of the cows had horns? It was quite an adventure to act as if we were time traveling to each different home and era. Our experience was packed full of fun hands on activities that helped us better understand the differences on long ago and today.

Welome to Mrs. Ziegler's 2005-2006 Class. We are working hard on our first grade VA Standards of Learning. In this picture, we took time to visit a local farm. At the Hutchinson's farm we learned all about the dairy process and pumpkins! There was even an opportunity to learn more about spiders. : )
